I am challenging myself to get better and faster at caricatures, and drawing in general, in hopes of getting editorial work. So my challenge is to quickly illustrate current gender-related events that are popping up in my twitter feed. To be honest, this one took me most of the day yesterday, and I am going to need to get faster than that. But with practice, I will get faster. Anyway…. Enjoy??? I posted some videos of the process on my Instagram if anyone finds that interesting.
It occurred to me I need to come up with a new way to sign my art because people are calling me “REALITY GIRL” and I actually never meant to take that on as a moniker. It was just something I came up with when I needed a name for the social media account for the zine “Why Are So Many Girls Deciding They’d Rather Be Boys” and I thought, “well, it’s about reality, and it’s about/for girls” and since I am quite bad at naming things, and I was in a rush, I made it “reality girl zine” and decided it was good enough.
I realized this was a problem when I did an interview recently, and I could tell the interviewer was a little surprised that I don’t have blue hair and a double mastectomy.
So to clarify, the zine is based on my experiences leading up to my attempted transition, and observations of others. I was an emotionally unstable adult when I went on testosterone, for under a year, and then my teenaged daughter also came out as trans and going through the whole parent of a “trans kid” experience. Yes, I blame myself but that’s a topic for another post.
I am glad I stopped before undergoing any surgeries. I don’t know what my daughter will do. I adamantly refused to sign off on hormones while she was under 18 and now it’s up to her so I can only hope for the best.
So, much of the zine is autobiographical, and some of it is based on observations. Anyway, it seemed like maybe I should clarify that and come up with a new name. I’ve been signing my stuff @realitygirlzine… not sure what to do about that now.
Sorry for rambling.
