What even is an identity? And why do we all suddenly need to have one?
For targeted marketing purposes?
Why do schools think it’s their job to teach kids to ruminate about their identity for 6-8 hours a day. Please put them all in plumbing/electric internships and I promise you it will solve all problems.
Thank you! I printed this and put it up in my classroom. I'm always looking for material that has a healthy message (alternatives to transing) that won't get me fired. It is amazing how an identity is expected to be pulled out of thin air rather than being something that evolves over the years, based on our relationships, experiences, and changing interests. Even faculty are forced to spend hours navel gazing and discussing our identities.
Have you seen the photo of a woman in a burka with the message "Ask me about my pronouns?" I've thought of putting that up in my classroom to give some perspective, though it would probably be a huge mistake. Funny thing: a few months ago, it was easy to find that image online (I first saw it on Twitter). Now it seems to have disappeared from the internet.
